Investigation on the Coverage and Effectiveness of Mass Drug Administrations Programs on Helminthiasis Among Children in Indonesia
Mass Drug Administration is one of the strategy use by countries to intervene the progression of
helminth infection. The goal of MDA program is to give preventive chemotherapy to a populations by
using broad spectrum anti-helminthic drugs. The drugs were administered by the people once or twice a
year depending on the prevalence of their region. The Indonesian government has applied this strategy
to eliminate the country’s burden against STH and filariasis since the year 2007. However the effectiveness
of the MDA program need to be investigated in order to find the perfect way against helminth infection.
Since different countries are battling with different type of helminth due to the difference in the
environment. Another concern is the children age group who are more prone of getting helminth infection
due to their lifestyle of playing outside often. This study aims to measure the MDA program effectiveness
toward children and the general population by analyzing at the prevalence before MDA and years after
MDA program. The result showed that MDA program in Indonesia are effective on all age groups, whereas
there is still a raising concern of the increasing of children helminth prevalence.
