Extract Standardization and Acute Toxicity Study of Lempuyang (Zingiber Zerumbet (L.)) extract as Potential Covid-19 Treatment
The Current COVID-19 pandemic has infected thousands of people, hence its medication was on demand. Medicinal plant cultivation is one of the assets of Indonesia and one of them is Lempuyang or Zingiber zerumbet (L.), which is a traditional medicinal plant from Indonesia with various proven therapeutic effects, i.e. antibacterial and antifungal, that have high flavonoid content. Extracts need to be standardized to ensure its safety, quality, and effectiveness, which include the specific and non-specific parameters. Also, to observe any short-term adverse effect of oral administration of the extract, acute toxicity was done. The results of specific parameters include water-soluble and ethanol-soluble components, with 16.52% and 2.30%, respectively. The non-specific parameters include total ash content, acid-insoluble ash, density, water content, and total plate count of bacteria and fungi, with all non-specific results meeting the requirement except the total ash content. While, the acute toxicity results in GHScategory 5 and LO",above 2000 mg/kg suggested lempuyang extract is considered to be low acute toxiCity level.
