Value Improvement Project (VIP): Replacement of Double Wall (5-Ply) with Single Wall Lightweight (3-Ply) Corrugated Box for Royco Sachet g in PT. Unilever Indonesia
orrugated box is one of the most used secondary packaging, especially in Asia Pacific for the food
and beverage industry. Single wall lightweight corrugated box is one of the breakthroughs that offer a
costeffective packaging material to replace the double wall corrugated box for the industry. Unilever
Indonesia aims to obtain costeffective packaging material but still high in quality, which is the basis
of a value improvement project on the Royco sachet g’s corrugated box. Theoretically, the single
wall lightweight corrugated box has a competitive advantage compared to the double wall
corrugated box due to the higher box strength value consisting of BCT and safety factor. Still, it
should be validated through its runnability in automatic packing line, stacking test and transportation
test. In all tests, the number of defects from single wall lightweight and double wall corrugated box
samples were analyzed and classified based on the Unilever Quality Standard. The number of defects
from both samples was compared to one another and should be within the company’s acceptable
range. As a result, it was found that the replacement of double wall to single wall lightweight
corrugated box was not the only cause of defects throughout the tests. Machine ability and handling
process during distribution also contributed to the defects of the corrugated box. Dynamic load and
stress might interfere with the BCT and safety factor value that is measured in static condition.
Therefore, the company should consider improvements on the machine and an indepth analysis of
the handling process before the project implementation.
