Phytochemicals and Antioxidant activity analysis of Binahong (Anredera Cordifolia, (Ten) Steenis) and Malabar Spinach (Basella Alba) Leaf and Stem Ethanolic Extract

Sherly Indah Rahayu - Personal Name;

The most important sources of biomolecules that can be screened from plant components are thought to be plant extracts. These biomolecules may be extracted from medicinal plants using a variety of solvents and extraction techniques. Due to their simplicity, effectiveness, and broad application, solvent extractions are the most widely used processes to create extracts from plant materials. Binahong and Malabar Spinach are plants from the Basellaceae family with great phytochemicals and antioxidant activity that are still underutilized. Moreover, previous studies mostly used methanol or hexane for the solvent extraction. Thus, in this experiment, the solvent chosen for extraction is ethanol as it is considered as a safe and environmentally friendly solvent. The aim of this research is to see whether the Binahong (Anredera cordifolia), and Malabar Spinach (Basella alba) extracts have antioxidant and great phenolic and flavonoid content when extracted using ethanol. There are 3 assays used to measure the phytochemicals and antioxidant activity of the ethanol extracts which are Total Phenolic Content (TPC) to measure total phenol content, Total Flavonoid Content (TFC) to measure the total flavonoid content, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay to measure the antioxidant scavenging activity. In order to measure the changes occurring during storage, One-way ANOVA analysis was used to show whether significant or insignificant differences (P>0.05) occurred. The result showed that Binahong leaves and Malabar Spinach stems are the parts that have the most antioxidants which is proven by comparing the data between the samples and also the literature. Pre-treatment which is to wash the simplicia with non-polar solvent to remove impurities and also higher class of analysis such as HPLC are recommended for future studies.
