Formulation of Sunscreen with Extracts Combination for Skin Protection Against UV-B Radiation

Christi Wirawan - Personal Name;

Excessive exposure toward sun exposure manifests various dermatological issues, including
sunburn and skin aging, and subsequently leads to advanced conditions such as skin cancers, with
UV-B playing a key role by causing oxidative stress and mutations. Sunscreen is necessary to prevent
the detrimental consequences of UV-B radiation. However, the inconvenience and concerns over
chemical ingredients outweighed the importance of applying sunscreen. Natural compounds like
Green Tea and Moringa oleifera have been discovered for their photoprotective and antioxidant
properties against UV-B. Despite the extensive research demonstrating the individual photoprotective
properties of the extracts individually, the interaction between the extracts toward UV-B radiation has
never been investigated. This study aims to assess the increased effects of these extracts toward the
antioxidant and cytoprotective activity while formulating an optimized gel-based sunscreen with
adequate SPF in combination with octinoxate tailored for individuals with oily skin toward UV-B
protection. A total polyphenol of 10% in Green Tea and 26.87 ± 0.61 mg QE/g of Moringa oleifera
increased antioxidant and cytoprotective ability. The most significant increase in antioxidant activity
was reported at 12.5 ppm extract combinations.In contrast, an increase in cytoprotective activity was
reported at a concentration of 50 ppm extract combinations. A SPF value of 36 was obtained in the
final formulation, signifying an adequate SPF protection. Additionally, sunscreen possessed expected
physicochemical properties but was unstable under cycling temperatures.
