Effects of Coriandrum sativum L. Extract on the Cognitive Function and Behavior on Memory Impaired Mice

Aurelia Jeanita Sumarli - Personal Name;

Cognition is an individual’s ability to learn, solve, and appropriately use stored information. Cognitive
deficits can manifest in various ways and are commonly caused mainly by age, and other health
conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases as well as side effects from certain drugs. Currently,
natural supplements using herbal plants have been investigated as cognitive enhancers and boost the
cognitive function. There is however limited understanding on the effectiveness of a herbal plant
such as Coriander on preventing cognitive deficits or boosting cognitive function. This research aims
to assess the effectiveness of Coriander leaves extract on memory-impaired mice through behavioral
tests and determination of AChE enzyme activity levels and MDA oxidative stress levels, as well as a
gene expression study of BDNF. In summary, treatment with coriander extract showed no significance
in acting as supplement to improve memory impairment as results from behavoural assay,
Acetylcholine and MDA level as well as the BDNF expression tests were inconclusive. Those results
were due to inability of scopolamine in inducing memory impairment in mice hippocampus. Future
recommendations in doing repeated dose administration of scopolamine, addition of CREB protein
study, modification of mice diets, proper handling of the mice, and investigation of synergistic effects
of coriander extract with conventional drugs..
