The Synthesis of Kusunokinin Intermediate for Anti-cancer Agent
Mahidol University is one of the best Campuses in Thailand, which focused on science and medicine. Organic chemistry is part of the department that mainly focuses on the synthesis of natural compounds as well as finding new synthetic methods that are more effective. In this internship oppurtunity, the author got a chance to experience how to work as a chemist. Specifically, this internship project works on the organic synthesis to kusunokinin compound to produce kusunokinin intermediate which will be used to identify the cytotoxic activity towards cancer cells (breast cancer). In order to achieve the aim, NMR was used to characterize to desired compound which can also be used as a benchmark of successfull product generation. During the project, NMR data was obtained from every reaction conducted (alkylation, stobbe condesation, hydrogenation, and cyclization) to ensure that the desired product is produced successfully. The contaminants can also be detected through NMR by identifying the peak at the anticipated position with the proton number. Moreover, the percentage yield was also calculated to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the chemical reactions. At the end of the experiment, data interpretation was done to determine whether the project had been conducted properly or not as well as to determine the success of the product generation. The author had completed half of the full reactions due to the limited time. Hence at the end of the internship period, the product generated was not the final product yet. Thus, the goal of the internship project was yet to be achieved
